🎣 March Fishing Tips & Tricks
“Pre-Spawn Patterns = Big Bass Opportunities”
March is when things start getting exciting on the water. As temperatures begin to rise, bass transition from deep winter areas toward shallow spawning grounds. Fish become more active and predictable, which means anglers who understand the pre-spawn pattern can have some of the best fishing of the year.
🐟 1. Target Staging Areas
Before moving to the beds, bass stage in predictable locations.
Focus on:
-
Secondary points inside creeks
-
Channel swings near flats
-
Transition banks where rock meets sand or gravel
These areas act like rest stops before fish move shallow to spawn.
🌡️ 2. Watch the Water Temperature
Water temperature is key in March.
-
50–55°F: Bass begin moving toward shallow staging areas.
-
55–60°F: Pre-spawn activity increases and fish feed aggressively.
A few warm days in a row can dramatically improve the bite.
🎣 3. Power Fishing Can Work
Bass are feeding more heavily this time of year. Great lure choices include:
-
Spinnerbaits (especially on windy days)
-
Chatterbaits
-
Squarebill crankbaits around shallow cover
-
Lipless crankbaits over grass flats
These baits help you cover water quickly to locate active fish.
🐬 4. Look for Bait and Structure
If you find baitfish, bass won’t be far away. Use your electronics to locate:
-
Bait balls
-
Submerged grass lines
-
Rock transitions and points
Once you locate fish, slow down and work the area thoroughly.
🌞 5. Fish the Warmest Water
Bass are attracted to slightly warmer areas. Look for:
-
North-facing banks that receive more sunlight
-
Dark bottoms or rock banks that hold heat
-
Shallow pockets protected from cold wind
Sometimes just a 1–2 degree difference can make all the difference.
🧥 6. Be Ready for Changing Conditions
March weather can change quickly.
-
Bring rain gear and extra layers.
-
Wind can actually improve the bite by pushing baitfish into banks and points.
conservation corner
A simple act like picking up a few pieces of trash at the ramp or shoreline goes a long way. Encourage your partner or co-angler to do the same - small actions multiplied by many anglers make a huge difference
