tips & tricks
JANUARY Fishing Tips
🐟 1. Slow Is the Only Speed
Bass metabolism is at its lowest point.
-
Use finesse presentations: jig & trailer, Ned rig, drop shot, shaky head.
-
Long pauses are key - sometimes letting a bait sit still makes all the difference.
🎯 2. Focus on Deep, Stable Water
Bass seek consistent water temperatures.
-
Target main lake points, channel swings, deep docks, ledges, and bluffs.
-
Look for areas close to both deep water and shallow feeding flats.
🎣 3. Jigs Are Winter Workhorses
A football or casting jig excels in January.
-
Drag it slowly along the bottom.
-
Pay attention to subtle bites - pressure changes matter more than aggressive strikes.
🐬 4. Electronics Win in Winter
Use your electronics to locate:
-
Stacked fish near the bottom
-
Suspended baitfish
-
Hard structure like rock or shell beds
If you’re not seeing fish, keep moving until you do.
🌞 5. Fish the Warmest Part of the Day
Midday usually offers the best bite.
-
Sun-warmed rock banks and north-facing shorelines can hold slightly warmer water.
-
Even a 1-2 degree increase can turn the bite on.
🧥 6. Safety First
January conditions demand caution.
-
Always wear your PFD.
-
Dress in layers and bring spare dry clothes.
-
Take extra time at the ramp - icy surfaces are no joke.
conservation corner
A simple act like picking up a few pieces of trash at the ramp or shoreline goes a long way. Encourage your partner or co-angler to do the same - small actions multiplied by many anglers make a huge difference
